Calling Ethan a contemplative activist might sound like an oxymoron, yet his warmth and determination to foment change on a wide array of gender and sexual violence issues allow him to reach audiences wide and far. As a trans man and survivor of sexual violence, Ethan communicates his life experiences with clarity and conviction.

Ethan Czuy Levine is a sociologist, antiviolence advocate, and award-winning speaker on interpersonal violence and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, & other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) communities. His research focuses primarily on sexual and intimate partner violence. His first book, Rape by the Numbers: Producing and Contesting Scientific Research about Sexual Violence, explored the history and politics of scholarship in this area. His articles have been published in journals such as Violence Against Women, Sexualities, and the Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

Outside of academia, he has more than 10 years’ experience advocating for survivors of all genders and sexualities. This has included direct service work, such as staffing crisis hotlines, medical accompaniment, court accompaniment, police department accompaniment, supporting survivors and their children in shelters; and education and outreach, such as developing and facilitating workshops for diverse community and professional audiences.
